Nature Notes (#502)~The geese are nesting in our yard~ The Gooslings…

We had a few days of really nice weather followed by a bad wind and thunderstorm even and now we are back to colder weather but we are moving along in spring…. The crocus are blooming…..

******

The canada geese are claiming territory for their nest and the females are starting the nest building…..

This pair has nested in our yard right next to the pond for the last 4 years. The first two attempts were flooded out when it rained hard so I started leaving a pile of leaves right next to that spot so the goose would have a better chance of keeping her nest. Not the best photos as they are cell phone photos…

Other pairs nest in the woods and I know some of the homeowners go back and destroy some or all of the eggs and some geese have been killed. Yes, they are protected but that doesn’t keep people from ignoring the law… Our yard is the safest place for them as I will not harm them and they know that.

Have a wonderful nature-filled week! Please be safe.

WELCOME SPRING!!!

Happy for somewhat warmer weather for my nature observations….

Two silver maples face each other in the yard….

Photo below shows the fall leaves and the shape of the leaves. They grow fast and tend to have shallow roots….

The silver maples are one of the earliest trees to flower in western New York. There are male and female trees which can be determined by the flowers…

My tree has male flowers which have long stamens…

Below are the female flowers-They are wind pollinated

They are

But I can’t look at this tree in isolation as it is part of a community … a web of interwoven life that has played out for millions of years….

The tree provides shade for our yard….

And a place for the bird feeders to hang so that a gray squirrel can pilfer a peanut

A place for birds to look for insects when it gets warmer..
